Manufacturers who focus on their core competence use a variety of services: for the design, planning, engineering and construction of plants as well as their validation, e.g. in accordance with GMP, for QM and process optimisation. Simulation, big data analysis, cloud services and artificial intelligence complement existing IT systems for production data acquisition, process control and recipe management. This enables improvements, including in maintenance, and targets such as OEE, including energy and resource consumption, to be achieved more and more effectively. 
Other service providers take over the complete contract manufacturing or packaging, and special research tasks can be outsourced to scientific institutions or equipment suppliers, who often have laboratory and pilot plants available for this purpose.
