Cross-sector exchange creates competitive advantages

Progress rarely arises within one’s own sphere. That is why POWTECH TECHNOPHARM brings together experts from a wide range of industries. Cross-sector exchange highlights how process engineering solutions are applied in other fields – and what potential this holds for one’s own company. Particularly when it comes to future-oriented topics such as digitalisation and the circular economy, the most valuable insights arise from exchange between sectors.

Expertise in process industry technologies can be applied across a wide range of sectors. POWTECH TECHNOPHARM fosters connections and promotes the transfer of knowledge.

Processing powders, solids and liquids has a long tradition. Millers and bakers, brewers and winemakers, blacksmiths, miners, potters and salt workers were among the first to use process engineering techniques. These included, then as now, crushing, separating, mixing, heating and cooling, as well as the transformation of materials using chemistry, biochemistry or biology.

This diversity of process engineering still shapes the range of products and services on offer at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM today. Over the decades, further product fields have complemented the core process technologies mentioned in production, such as agglomeration, granulation, coating and freeze-drying. New product developments such as nanoparticles have led to highly specialised techniques.

Production solutions for the entire value chain

For some years now, exhibitors have been gradually covering the entire value chain in the relevant process industries: from feeding, raw material preparation and dosing, through the transport and storage of intermediate and end products, to filling, packaging and labelling. Process control systems that drive automation based on measurement and analysis data are becoming increasingly important. Components, systems and measuring instruments that ensure the protection of the environment and people are also gaining in importance. They provide explosion protection, prevent fires, monitor emissions and treat them. Last but not least, developers of products and processes will find the necessary laboratory equipment, including analysis systems, sensors and software, right through to multifunctional apparatus for scale-up.

Sectors such as the pharmaceutical and food industries will also find innovative technology at the fair, as will the chemical, plastics and recycling sectors.

Two-thirds of exhibitors offer technology for the pharmaceutical industry

Thanks to this diverse range of offerings, POWTECH TECHNOPHARM appeals to a wide variety of sectors. A good three-quarters of exhibitors showcase technologies for the chemical industry, and almost as many offer solutions for the food industry or process engineering. More than 50 per cent are targeting visitors from the cosmetics and personal care, construction, stone, earth, ceramics and glass, as well as plastics and rubber sectors with their innovations.

The range of products and services for pharmaceutical production received a significant boost in 2025 with the revival of the TECHNOPHARM exhibition area – supported by the APV (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Pharmazeutische Verfahrenstechnik e. V.). The focus is on GMP-compliant plants and equipment that meet the highest standards of hygiene and product safety. Added to this are specialised cleaning and tableting processes, as well as systems for comprehensive documentation. By 2026, two-thirds of exhibitors will already be contributing solutions for the highly regulated pharmaceutical sector.

Benefiting from the experience of neighbouring sectors

If you put two and two together, it becomes clear that most exhibitors target significantly more than one visitor sector with their product portfolio. It is precisely this that makes the fair so appealing: visitors gain a broad overview of new products, processes and developments, whilst also being able to track trends from neighbouring sectors of the process industry. This allows boundaries between disciplines to be overcome and new approaches to be discovered. Conversely, many exhibitors are also keen to present the benefits of new products to a wide audience. Even if these were initially developed with the needs of a specific sector in mind, discussions with technical experts allow the opportunities and possibilities for their application in other industries to be explored. In this way, many long-standing exhibitors have succeeded in using POWTECH TECHNOPHARM as a springboard into new markets and have gradually expanded their sectoral focus.

Newer sectors stand to benefit particularly when established solutions are applied to new areas of application. The circular economy, for example, is driving progress and change, spurred on by legislation such as the Packaging Ordinance, the Waste Framework Directive, the Ecodesign Regulation and the planned new Circular Economy Act (CEA). Recycling plays a central role in this. Many of the process technologies on display at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM are used in this context: from shredding and the separation of materials and their cleaning through to further processing into recyclates. Proven processes exist for glass, plastics, metals and paper. The recycling of electronic waste and batteries offers growing potential, with numerous critical raw materials able to be recovered. Textile recycling is also gaining in importance, with the aim of moving away from downcycling towards fibre-to-fibre recycling.

Mature and innovative products for the circular economy

Already today, well over half of all POWTECH TECHNOPHARM exhibitors offer products, processes and solutions for specific sectors of the recycling industry. In 2026, there will also be a dedicated area for specialist suppliers in this field for the first time: the Recycling-in-Focus Pavilion offers them the opportunity to present innovations for the future of recycling in a suitable environment. This creates a special hub for visitors and exhibitors who want to drive the circular economy forward. Similarly, the Smart-Industry-in-Focus pavilion cater to experts in digitalisation and automation, whilst the Pharma-in-Focus pavilion is designed for suppliers and users in the pharmaceutical industry.

Numerous trade fair visitors sit on white blocks and listen to a presentation
The presentations at the Expert Forum provide even more inspiration and the opportunity to think outside the box and exchange ideas.

In 2026, an expert forum covering a wide range of topics will once again provide inspiration and numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange. Here, exhibitors and users will present their innovative solutions and offer insights into current projects. This time, the range of topics extends from pharmaceutical processing, food processing, plant engineering and process engineering, through smart industry topics such as automation and digitalisation, to the sustainability section, where presentations on energy-efficient production are welcome alongside those on recycling processes. The call for papers remains open until 12 June. A few presentation slots are still available.

Conclusion: Cross-sector inspiration drives competitiveness

Visitors from a wide range of sectors within the process industry looking for new inspiration will find exactly what they are seeking at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM 2026. Those who broaden their horizons and think beyond industry boundaries will discover solutions from numerous exhibitors whose benefits can be applied to their own processes and procedures. It is particularly in the pavilions and the expert forum that answers to the challenges of our time can be found – on the path to greater sustainability and global competitiveness.
