In an exhibition hall, there is a stage with a large screen, where two speakers are delivering a presentation to visitors seated in several rows.
Informative presentations and lively discussions: The expert forums, which take place in the middle of the exhibition halls, have attracted large audiences in recent years.

Things get underway early on the first day of the trade fair, Tuesday, 23 September 2025. The POWTECH FORUM, located in Hall 12 at Stand 12-230, commences at 9:30 a.m. with an extensive series of presentations on 'Plant Engineering, Automation, and Process Optimisation'. This topic will be further explored in a subsequent comprehensive session on Thursday. The first presentation gets right to the heart of the matter: Dr Claas Bierwisch, a group leader at Fraunhofer IWM who has 20 years' experience in powder technology and particle simulation, will present a new test bench for powder characterisation and demonstrate how to obtain a flow behaviour fingerprint. This will be followed by three presentations on process measurement and control by experts from Bürkert Fluid Control, Wika and Endress+Hauser. Anyone looking for smart automation solutions, wanting to improve plant performance, or interested in retrofitting silos with IIoT weighing technology should not miss these presentations.

Safety is a top priority

At 11:30 a.m., IND EX will kick off the Safety & Security theme block. The Association of Explosion Protection Experts has launched the POWfunding Safety Programme. This programme aims to enable systematic learning from explosion events based on a neutral platform. Industry, science and the authorities will all be involved. The association's presidents, Dr Johannes Lottermann and Aleksander Agatonovic, will present the concept and answer any questions. Next, there will be a series of practical sessions covering topics such as fine dust and its risks, new approaches to preventive explosion protection, and flameless pressure relief.

VR and AR were already important topics at POWTECH in 2023. The 2025 presentation programme shows that digitalisation is becoming increasingly important.

AI, VR, Industry 4.0: POWTECH has arrived in the future

Keywords such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, Smart Factory 4.0 and Packaging 4.0 make it clear that the presentations on Tuesday afternoon will focus on Future Technologies in Mechanical Engineering, starting at 1:30 p.m. Thomas Eules from F.lli Sacchi will open the session with a presentation for anyone looking to replace manual processes in powder handling with robotics and AI. His approach to Smart Factory 4.0 could certainly be linked to that of Sebastian Pohl. At 16:00, the Greif-Velox managing director will present Packaging 4.0, a concept for optimising packaging machines using VR and AI. This presentation is also likely to be of interest to many visitors to the neighbouring FACHPACK trade fair. And in between? At 2:30 p.m., Fr. Jacob Söhne will give a presentation on augmented reality for pipeline planning, which not only fills the technology gap, but is also sure to be a particularly vivid and entertaining presentation. At 15:30, Stefan Matschiner from ESA will give a presentation on the importance of digitalisation for more efficient processes and better traceability, giving medium-sized and large companies a competitive advantage.

What role do future technologies play in cleaning filters? Stephan Cocciardi from Reco provides an answer in his presentation, ‘Beyond the Blast’. In two presentations, Hosokawa Alpine experts also explain the benefits of high technology in their applications, such as making jet mills more efficient and optimising processes with predictive maintenance.

Wednesday: Highlight presentations for food manufacturers

Many presentations on Wednesday will be aimed at the food industry, but, as always, people from other industries may find them useful, too. In the ‘Food Production: Processing Meets Packaging', starting at 9:30am, will cover a wide range of topics. Alessio Salciccia from AM Atomizers Technology will open the session. He promises a breakthrough in atomisation technology for numerous applications. Next, the experts from Payper will demonstrate how dust-free bagging of powders can be achieved, bringing us to the end of the process chain.

At 10:30 a.m., Prof. Rainer Barnekow from TH OWL will take to the stage. He has organised a forum section on the topic of ‘Powders and Instant Products in High-Speed Cycles’. This life sciences technology expert will first present the most common errors in solid mixing and their consequences. He will then hand over to selected experts from Hecht Technologie, Amixon, Lödige and Fr. Jacob Söhne. Through presentations on topics such as bulk material handling, mixing, granulation and packaging, these experts will highlight optimisation opportunities in the food industry along the production chain. Prof. Barnekow will lead a lively discussion after each presentation.

This will be followed by four presentations from a series organised by the ZLV (the Centre for Food and Packaging Technology). The association has made a name for itself by regularly organising a major packaging symposium at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. In 2025, it will contribute its topics to the POWTECH Forum for the first time. Further details will be announced in due course.

There is always room for more sustainability
From 3 p.m., three presentations will emphasise the importance of Environmental Protection and Sustainability for exhibitors and visitors at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM. They will explore this topic from a variety of different angles. Dr Alberto Militare from LB Officine Meccaniche will present granulation and its role in making industrial processes more sustainable. Polina Aman from Nanofract will emphasise the importance of micro- and nano-milling in producing reference materials for environmental and health research. Finally, Fabien Schünke, the managing director of Herding Filtertechnik, and CMO Jörg-Armin Schulz will demonstrate the diverse environmental benefits of efficient filtration technology, such as CO2 reduction, and explain how it can be digitally networked.

Increased cyber security in mechanical engineering

At 4:30 p.m., the presentation will primarily target mechanical and plant engineers among the trade fair visitors and exhibitors, as well as anyone else who recognises the importance of Cyber Security. Laurin Dörr, Managing Director of TG alpha, who has over 13 years' experience supporting companies in the field of cyber security for industrial plants, will explain in his presentation that CE conformity cannot be achieved without cyber security. Anyone interested in the role of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) in this context should attend.

Who will be crowned the ChemCar champion?

At the end of Wednesday, the VDI and its specialist group VDI-GVC will be putting a special focus on the ChemCar competition at 5:15 p.m. The award ceremony for the final round will take place at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM for the first time. Student teams from process engineering and chemistry courses will enter model vehicles into the race, which are powered by (bio)-chemical reactions. The vehicles must cover a predetermined distance as accurately as possible while carrying an additional weight.

Well measured is half automated

On Thursday, the second major session on Plant Engineering, Automation and Process Optimisation will take place. There will be presentations on issues specific to bulk solids technology, as well as topics of interest to most trade fair visitors. Topics range from Granutools' expertise in real-time electrostatic charge measurement in powder processing, to modern operating concepts from Azo, and the use of Vega radar sensors and cloud services in inventory management. Those interested in the weighing electronics of dosing systems or sintered membrane filtration or wear protection will find plenty to interest them.

Starting at 1 p.m., Dr Stefan Mende from Netzsch-Feinmahltechnik will attempt to explain the complexities of formulation and process development for pigment preparations and inks in just 20 minutes. Lucas Nievelstein from Neuman & Esser Process Technology will present a concise overview of impact and jet technologies. He will compare impact separators and jet mills, as well as their respective areas of application, throughputs, and energy requirements.

Inspiration and tips for starting careers

From 2 p.m., the programme primarily targets young professionals among the trade fair visitors (Thursday is Student Day!), an initiative supported by the VDI. Under the heading 'Career Journeys in Process Engineering', start-up founder Ronja Weidemann, technical project manager Dr Silvie Müller from Merck KGaA, and Dr Sara Marchini, a research assistant at the Chair of Chemical Process Engineering at TU Dresden, will share their career journeys and offer advice. Lisa Schmitz from Hays will offer specific advice on starting a career. She will explain how to stand out with soft and hard skills.

The final two presentations at the POWTECH Forum 2025 will once again be highly technical. First, Andreas Eickmeier from CinchSeal will explain how an idea is revolutionising sealing technology. Finally, Günther Gschwandtner from Binder+Co will conclude with a presentation on the use of waste heat in fluidised bed drying plants.

Explosion protection is an important topic, not only at the POWTECH Forum. The live demonstrations, held twice a day in the outdoor area, are always well attended.

And much more

Even if you were to spend three days at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM simply visiting the POWTECH FORUM, you would not get bored. The TECHNOPHARM FORUM and the IND EX Explosion Safety Forum are also taking place at the same time. The FACHPACK forums PACKBOX, INNOVATIONBOX and SOLPACK also bring together relevant knowledge for visitors to both trade fairs. The supporting programme also offers plenty more, including the inaugural Women4Processing networking event and the ever-popular live demonstrations on explosion protection. However, for most visitors, exhibitors from over 25 countries remain the priority. Their exhibits, their expertise in providing solutions and, above all, the knowledge of their experts make POWTECH TECHNOPHARM indispensable for the international process engineering community.
